By putting relentless pressure on opponents, the Mountain City Christian girls basketball team beats up teams mentally before beating them on the scoreboard.

The Lions play with passion and are in perpetual movement, making it hard to keep up. Nobody in Alaska has been able to for six years.

They racked up another win Wednesday after beating West Anchorage 72-51 on Day 2 of the Alaska Airlines Classic, extending their record winning streak to 128 games against in-state competition.

MCC improved to 5-0 on the season and 2-0 in the tournament, snapping West’s seven-game Classic winning streak and putting in jeopardy the home team’s chances to win the title for a third straight year.

The two-time defending Class 4A state champion Lions can claim the Classic title with a victory over Tikigaq on Thursday.

They looked the part against the Eagles, using a 17-5 run in the second quarter to turn a three-point lead into a 34-19 cushion.

The Eagles got five straight points from Litara Tauali to get as close as 34-24 before MCC ended the half with a Maliyah Alex drive and Keelie Kronberger 3-pointer.

Kronberger had five 3s in the first half as the Lions took a 39-24 advantage into halftime. The sophomore sharpshooter finished the game with 19 points and those five 3s, one shy of the tournament record of six set by Kim Lummus of Cleburne (TX).

Jasmine Scheaffer just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds, Nyami Mathot ripped down 12 rebounds and Morgan Maldonado had six assists for the school formerly known as ACS.

West (2-3) got 15 points from Wednesday Bithow, who scored 10 in the first seven minutes, while Ariel Misa nearly had a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds.

But in the end, the Eagles were plagued by turnovers and poor shot selection.

Jennifer Nash netted 17 points while Tatyana Nashookpuk and Ella Kowunna flirted with double-doubles as the Harpoonerettes pulled away from Grace Christian.

Nashookpuk collected nine points and eight rebounds and Kowunna had nine points and seven rebounds as Tikigaq evened its record to 1-1 in the Alaska Airlines Classic.

Haley Nashookpuk had four points and nine rebounds for Harpoonerettes, who seized control with a 16-2 run in the second quarter.

Nash was her typical stellar self. She was the best player on the court and scored in a variety of ways, including a 3-pointer, offensive rebounds, a spin post move and a circus shot falling out of bounds while being fouled.

Kasey Rock added five points and twice scored on inbounds plays. Coach’s kid.

Kowunna was active and earned a game-high seven trips to the free-throw line.

Grace was led by Hope Jackson’s nine points, Jaden Helton and Molly Schild’s five rebounds and Josie Evans-Grant’s speed to break the press.

The Grizzlies were without some veteran plays, but the younger kids stood tall.

Early on, Evans-Grant cashed in a pretty reverse layup off a nice feed from Schild. Moments later Schild grabbed a teammate’s missed free throw and converted the offensive rebound for a 7-4 lead.

Jackson made the only 3-point bucket for the Grizzlies, who fell to 0-2 in the Classic.
