Another notable quarterback has arrived on the transfer market.

According to multiple reports, Tyler Van Dyke, a three-year starter at Miami, entered his name into the portal on Monday. Van Dyke had an eventful career in Miami as he dealt with a series of coaching changes. He was the 2021 ACC Rookie of the Year after being pushed into the lineup for the injured D’Eriq King.

After head coach Manny Diaz was fired and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee became SMU head coach, Van Dyke struggled in 2022 as the Hurricanes transitioned into the Mario Cristobal era. Cristobal’s first OC hire was Josh Gattis, but that only lasted a year.

Things went better for Van Dyke this year with new OC Shannon Dawson, especially early in the season, but he struggled as the season progressed. He struggled with some injuries and was substituted for the Florida State game in favor of freshman Emory Williams, but Van Dyke played in Miami’s final two games after Williams was injured.

In three seasons, Van Dyke threw for 7,469 yards and 54 touchdowns with 23 interceptions.

With Van Dyke transferring and Williams injured, Miami (7-5) only has one healthy scholarship quarterback available for its bowl game – redshirt freshman Jacurri Brown.

Van Dyke is one of four Miami players appearing in the portal on Monday, along with DE Jahfari Harvey, RB Don Chaney and LB Corey Flagg.

Will Howard, a longtime starting quarterback at Kansas State, has entered his name into the portal as a graduate transfer. Howard started seven games in 2020, three games in 2021 and five games in 2022 before becoming a full-time starter this season. Howard played for the injured Skylar Thompson in his first two seasons in Manhattan, then replaced Adrian Martinez as the starter in 2022 and helped K-State win the Big 12 title.

This year, Howard started the season strong but ended up splitting reps at times with award-winning freshman Avery Johnson. Snaps for Johnson began to decline later in the year, but Johnson is considered the quarterback of the future in Manhattan.

Since Howard still has one more season of eligibility, he is likely to attract a lot of interest in the transfer market.

Over his career, Howard has thrown for 5,786 yards and 48 touchdowns with 25 interceptions while completing 58.8% of his throws. The 6-foot, 220-pound Howard is also a strong runner and has rushed for 921 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground in his career.

Former five-star USC WR Raleek Brown hits the portal

A once-awarded recruit plans to leave the program after producing limited results in his first two years of college USC Rivals page. Brown was rated as a five-star prospect in 2022 out of high school as an all-purpose player. He saw some early action as a freshman before an ankle injury limited him for the rest of the year, which he finished with 151 yards and three touchdowns receiving and 166 yards and two touchdowns rushing. He briefly played in two games this season before opting out to preserve his redshirt. He retains his three-year eligibility.

Baylor starts transfer QB Blake Shapen

Blake Shapen, a longtime starting quarterback for Baylor, told ESPN that he plans to transfer. Shapen started two games in 2021 and then became the Bears’ full-time starter the past two seasons. However, Shapen has struggled with several injuries this season as Baylor struggled to a 3-9 record.

Over his career, Shapen has thrown for 5,574 yards and 36 touchdowns with 13 interceptions while completing 63.7% of his attempts. He also has six career rushing touchdowns.

Treshaun Ward back in the transfer portal

It appears Treshaun Ward will be leaving Kansas State after one season. Ward began his career at Florida State and totaled 1,143 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Seminoles in 2021 and 2022. This season, he passed for 643 yards and five touchdowns while sharing rushing duties with DJ Giddens at Kansas State.

As a graduate transfer, Ward still has one season left.

Chris Tyree is leaving Notre Dame

Chris Tyree, a veteran of the Notre Dame offensive line, has decided to leave South Bend.

Tyree began his career as a running back but played as a slot receiver for the Fighting Irish this year. In his career, Tyree has 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns as a runner and 82 catches for 945 yards and seven touchdowns as a receiver.

Tyree still has one year of eligibility left.

The transfer portal is filling up with more QBs

Several Power Five starters have already entered the portal, including some lesser-known QBs with starting experience.

One QB who could attract a lot of attention is Indiana’s Brendan Sorsby. Sorsby was IU’s starter but scored after Tom Allen was sacked. As a redshirt freshman, Sorsby played in ten games and threw for 1,587 yards, 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 286 yards and four scores.

Another redshirt freshman QB in the Big Ten looking to transfer is Katin Houser, who started seven games at Michigan State this season. Houser became MSU’s starter in the second half of the season, throwing for 1,132 yards, six TDs and five INTs with two rushing touchdowns. MSU hired Jonathan Smith from Oregon State over the weekend, but Houser wants to explore his options.

Elsewhere, Utah QB Nate Johnson told ESPN he is transferring. With Cam Rising out for the Utes, Johnson started several games this season but ended up behind Bryson Barnes on the depth chart. Rising will be back next season, so Johnson — who threw for 499 yards, rushed for 235 yards and scored seven total touchdowns — will pursue his playing time elsewhere.

In the SEC, Vanderbilt’s Ken Seals announced his intention to transfer. Seals started in three different seasons at Vandy but was never able to claim the starting role. In 27 career games, Seals has thrown for 4,292 yards with 28 TDs and 22 INTs.

Texas A&M Max Johnson transfers for final season

Texas A&M QB Max Johnson announced Sunday that he is entering the transfer portal.

Johnson played eight games for the Aggies in 2023, taking over the team’s starting role when Connor Weigman suffered a season-ending foot injury. Johnson struggled with injuries of his own throughout the season and did not play in A&M’s final three games of the season.

The LSU transfer and son of former longtime NFL quarterback Brad Johnson finished the season completing 118 of 190 passes for 1,452 yards and nine touchdowns. He spent two seasons at Texas A&M after playing the first two years of his career with the Tigers.

Because he is a college graduate, Johnson is immediately admitted to his new school and does not require a waiver for a second transfer. He will likely be one of many Texas A&M players to enter the transfer portal this offseason as the Aggies search for a new head coach to replace Jimbo Fisher. Fisher was fired two games before the end of the season. A&M split its final two games and finished the season 7-5.

Mississippi State starter Will Rogers is transferring

Not long after Mississippi State lost to Ole Miss to finish the season 5-7, four-year quarterback Will Rogers announced he would play at a new school in 2024. Rogers was limited to eight games in 2023 due to injuries but is the school’s all-time leading passer.

Texas Tech Week 1 starter Tyler Shough announced on November 19 that he would be transferring to a new school in 2024. Like Johnson, this would be the second transfer of Shough’s career. But because he is a college graduate, he can play without an NCAA exemption.

Shough came to Texas Tech from Oregon and played in just 15 games in three seasons due to injuries.
