On hallowed ground, Anchorage’s Isaiah Moses proved he belonged.
The UC Riverside sophomore guard dropped 21 points on UCLA in Thursday’s 66-65 loss at the famous Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.
He 6-foot-1 guard out of Dimond High drained 8-of-13 shots and matched his season high with five 3-pointers, including a long-range bomb that tied the game at 63 with 1:40 to play.
Moses was sensational in the second half as UC Riverside kept the game close. The former NJCAA All-American and 2020 Gatorade Alaska Player of the Year pumped in 11 points in a four-minute span, capped by his 3-pointer that gave the Highlanders a 43-42 edge.
At crunch time, on back-to-back possessions, he assisted on a 3 and knocked down a triple of his own to tie the game at 63.
His 21 points one was shy of his season high set last month against Green Bay.
Moses is averaging 12.3 points and 4.6 assists in eight games.
At Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Anchorage’s Azaria Robinson recorded season high totals of seven points and 13 rebounds in today’s 103-35 win over Arkansas Baptist.
Robinson also blocked three shots in her fabulous 15-minute performance.
Last season, when she was with Arkansas-Little Rock, the 6-foot-2 forward ripped down 22 rebounds – the third-highest total by an Alaska woman at the college level.
At Northeastern, former Bartlett High standout Rashad King reached double figures for the third time in seven games after scoring 10 points in Wednesday’s 88-75 loss to Seton Hall in Newark, N.J.
The 6-foot-6 sophomore has seen his stats jump from last season, with his scoring averaging rising from 2.8 to 8.9, rebounds from 2.0 to 2.6 and assists from 1.0 to 2.1.
Two weeks ago, King pumped in a season-high 18 points and five rebounds against Kennesaw State and the next night drop eight dimes against Georgia Southern.
The GNAC league season opened Thursday and the only of the four Alaska schools that won was the UAF men. The Nanooks beat Seattle Pacific 82-64 for the team’s sixth win in 32 all-time meetings.
Abdullahi Mohamed led the way with 17 points while Fairbanks native Tyriq Luke collected nine points, five rebounds and four assists. The former all-state player out of West Valley High made a steal and layup to put the Nanooks up 38-25 near the end of the first half. Anchorage’s Demarcus Hall-Scriven started at guard and chipped in six points.
The 23rd-ranked Seawolves lost to Montana State-Billings 66-59, snapping UAA’s eight-game winning streak to open the season and spoiling the best start in the program’s 46-year history. Tyson Gilbert had 12 points, Sawyer Storms had 10 while the Anchorage trio of Jaron Williams (8), Hasaan Herrington (8) and Sloan Lentfer (5) combined for 21 points.
Billings earned a clean sweep with the women winning 83-68 despite a career-high 27 points from Senya Rabouin. Elaina Mack of King Cove was held to three points in 28 minutes.
The UAF women saw their two-game winning streak snapped after losing 70-43 to Seattle Pacific. Kayla Johnson pumped in 15 points while Fairbanks native Ellen Silva added six points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Anchorage’s Taylor Tiulana started at guard and had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.
