College Hoops: Deep dive into Isaiah Moses’ 30-point, 8-assist masterpiece reveals he was better than stats indicate

Isaiah Moses

Normally, a player scoring 30 points, hitting eight 3s and dishing eight assists in one game tells the full story of a dominating performance.

Not in the case of Isaiah Moses, though. A closer look revealed the UC Riverside sophomore from Anchorage was better than those numbers indicated – if that’s even possible.

Moses’ masterful performance propelled Saturday’s 82-63 win over Cal State Northridge, but he didn’t pad his stats. The bulk of his production came in the span of two terrific runs with the outcome still up for grabs.

In the first half, he scored or assisted on all 18 points during an 18-9 run that put the Highlanders ahead 21-16. Moses scored seven points and earned helpers on a hat trick of 3s and layup.

With Riverside nursing a 31-28 cushion in the second half, Moses directed a 25-7 run, this time having a hand in 24 points during a 28-7 spurt, including the final 18 straight, to put this thing to bed. All 24 points came on 3s, with Moses hitting four and getting assists on the other four.

Seemingly every consequential field goal in the win came because of Moses, a 6-foot-1 point guard who fits this team like a glove.

The team scored 78 of its 82 points with Moses on the court. Sure, he played 35 minutes, so let’s put this way: He was directly responsible for 65% of the scoring.

That ratio is jaw-dropping and demonstrates his enormous value to a team that stands 8-12 overall, 3-5 in the Big West. Where would the Highlanders be without him?

Moses, of Dimond High fame, was a NJCAA All-American last year before transferring to the Division I level this season.

Success doesn’t always translate, but Moses picked the right school in the right conference. We have seen elite Alaskans flourish in the Big West, Big Sky and Mountain West, and Moses is the latest example.

Moses leads his team and ranks 14th in the Big West in scoring (13.1), second in assists (4.7) and third with a 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio.

His 30 points was a season high; his career high of 34 was set last season at College of Idaho.

His eight assists were one shy of his season high of nine; his career high of 12 dimes came last year.

His eight 3-pointers were a career high as he became the ninth Alaskan to knock down eight 3s in a game, just the fourth at the Division I level.
