NFL teams continue trend of amusing schedule release videos

0

Lots of teams across the National Football League continued to meet the standard set on schedule release day. And the standard is an entertaining video on social media.

The Chicago Bears followed up last year’s excellent inspiration off “The Bear” with some references to popular films like “Mean Girls,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” and “The Breakfast Club.”

Wideout D.J. Moore is the main character, putting in a solid performance while actor Jake Johnson of “New Girl” fame narrates. His head coach Matt Eberflus, though, does some terrible acting, which is part of the amusement in the videos that lean in the skit direction. The star line reading comes from No. 1. overall pick Caleb Williams near the end. That kid has a future.

The Los Angeles Chargers are often the stars of the show and their creativity continued again by showcasing their schedule through the popular video games series “The Sims.” The video, like the previous iterations, is littered with some “if you know you know” inside jokes that are pretty ferocious burns.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went the animated comic book series route, featuring some nods to “X-Men.”

Our top video this year might be from the Dallas Cowboys. They did a video call to a celebrity opposing fan for each week’s opponent, and those fans were greeted by a frozen response from Cowboys fans artist Post Malone and streamer TimTheTatman or owner Jerry Jones, quarterback Dak Prescott and Hall of Famer Michael Irvin. The mix of reactions is great. Shoutout South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley with the “yuck” in response from her Philadelphia Eagles roots.

The Tennessee Titans made a wise choice of following up last year’s winner with a direct sequel of potentially intoxicated people on Broadway Street in Nashville. When in doubt, rely on people saying perplexing things on camera with instant cuts and a loud music cue to emphasize the absurdity. Always delivers.

Anchorage’s Alissa Pili officially laces ‘em up in WNBA, plays 10 minutes in pro debut

0

It didn’t take long for the Seattle Storm to realize they couldn’t bully rookie Alissa Pili on Tuesday night.

Seattle’s 6-foot-6 center Mercedes Russell took it to the Minnesota Lynx first-round draft pick out of Anchorage the moment Pili stepped onto a WNBA court for the first time at 4:56 of the first quarter.

Russell had Pili on her hip as she attempted to back her down in the post, but the Alaskan stood strong as Russell never really bumped Pili off her spot. Finally, a weakside foul by a teammate stopped the play but Pili had passed her first test.

So did the Lynx, who beat Seattle 83-70 on opening night as an 8-point road underdog. Pili played 10 minutes.

Coming into the season, the biggest question mark surrounding the two-time All-American forward out of the University of Utah was how she’d match up defensively. But she held her own when challenged as she showcased her brute force to hold firm when Seattle players tried (and failed) to body her up; both fouls she was whistled for were on reach ins.

Listed at 6-foot-2, Pili looked closer to 6 feet, yet her presence was not diminished on the biggest stage in women’s basketball.

The WNBA is a big jump from college and that leap can be humbling, especially the first game. After starting 122 of 128 games in college, Pili came off the bench Tuesday. And it may have been the first time she didn’t score in a game going back to the first time she touched a basketball.

One of only two Alaskans to score 2,000 points in high school and college, Pili didn’t really look to score Tuesday. Her only shot attempt came on a hurried 3-point shot. Other than that, she never touched the ball in a position to score.

There were times in the post when she sealed off her defender and Minnesota looked to get her the ball, but all three pass attempts resulted in a turnover. Pili made those plays look easy in college. Things will be more difficult in the WNBA, and Pili knows that, so look for her to adjust moving forward.

Minnesota’s next game is Friday at home against Seattle in at the back end of a home-and-home series to start the season.

WNBA DEBUTS
Game 1 Scoring For Alaskans

8 – Kelsey Griffin 5/15/10
6 – Andrea Lloyd 6/12/99
4 – Ruthy Hebard 7/26/20
0 – Molly Tuter 7/07/97
0 – Jessica Moore 5/28/05
0 – Alissa Pili 5/14/24

For the most part Tuesday, Pili camped out on the 3-point line. At Utah, she made 86 3s in two seasons on a 41% clip. She was 7-of-14 in two games at March’s NCAA Tournament, so the stroke is there. The opportunities were not.

Moments after missing her only shot attempt, Pili grabbed her first rebound in the WNBA.

Other than that, though, it was a pretty quiet night for the former Dimond High star. Most of her playing time came in the first half, although she was on the court late in the third quarter when the Lynx started to pull away.

“Financialisation” of Africa’s forests is driving inequality, says report

0

Market-based approaches to forest governance, such as forest carbon trading and deforestation-free supply chains, have proved largely ineffective in protecting forests or reducing poverty, according to a report by the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO)

“Market-based approaches to forest governance such as forest carbon trading and zero deforestation supply chains are becoming an increasingly popular pathway for forest governance and finance, but unfortunately, as the report shows, they risk perpetuating inequalities and producing perverse effects on sustainable forest management,” says Constance McDermott, professor at the University of Oxford and lead author of the report.

“The evidence does not support the claim of win-wins or triple wins for environment, economy and people often made for market mechanisms as a policy response to environmental problems,” adds Maria Brockhaus, professor at the University of Helsinki and contributing author.

An economic goldmine?

Market-based approaches to forest governance, such as exploiting the value of Africa’s carbon sinks, have been lauded by African leaders.

“The restoration and expansion of Africa’s natural carbon sinks are not just an environmental imperative, but an unparalleled economic goldmine,” said Kenyan President William Ruto at the Africa Climate Summit 2023.

“They have the potential to absorb millions of tonnes of CO₂ annually, which can translate into billions of dollars to improve livelihoods and millions of opportunities across the continent. And all of this comes while safeguarding our rich biodiversity”, he added.

The market for carbon credits could be worth upward of $50bn in 2030, according to a McKinsey report. It also predicts that demand for carbon credits could increase 15-fold or more by 2030, and potentially 100-fold by 2050.

Cautious approach required

But the report points out that, instead of providing a solution, market mechanisms can drive inequalities.

“The increasing urgency of the climate crisis has influenced the commodification of forests for their carbon sequestration potential. This has led to the rise of new markets for carbon and biodiversity that often focus on short-term economic gains over long-term sustainability and justice. Finance that includes philanthropic and community-led mechanisms offer a just alternative, but so far, have played a limited role,” says Dr Nelson Grima, deputy coordinator of IUFRO’s science policy programme.

The IUFRO argues that financial actors and shareholders are more often interested in short-term profits than long-term just and sustainable forest governance.

“The growing financialisation of the forest sector has led to short-term gains for financial actors, neglecting inequalities,” the report argues.

A $120m REDD+ financed project in the Democratic Republic of Congo “reinforced entrenched interests” by restricting local people’s access to forests without tackling logging by powerful extractive companies.

In Ghana, deforestation rates had risen despite a slew of sustainable cocoa standards, corporate pledges, and carbon offset projects, while farmers were earning less today than decades ago, said McDermott.

“Wins are often gained elsewhere, while the burdens of forest loss, enclosures and forestland conversion are carried locally,” said Brockhaus.

Holistic view of forests needed

The report authors argue that the financial value of forests is only one thing that should be taken into consideration when governments assess their underlying value.

“Measuring governance has mainly been related to the deforestation rate as the main indicator. However, forests provide many goods and services essential for people, which is why the effectiveness of international forest governance should also be measured against these needs,” said Daniela Kleinschmit, professor at Freiburg University, vice-president of IUFRO and main lead author of the report.

“Regardless of the finance sources, the underlying common ground must be to pursue social inclusion, redress social-environmental injustice, protect the land rights of resource-dependent communities, and support the transition towards a more just ecological future”, added Franklin Obeng-Odoom, professor at the University of Helsinki and lead author of the report.

U Mobile and Enfrasys conducts Private 5G Network PoC

0

U Mobile in partnership with Enfrasys Solutions has concluded a private 5G network proof-of-concept (PoC) in Butterworth, Penang to assess the feasibility of automating Transocean Logistic’s container inspection process. The PoC showcased the benefits of using 5G, multi-access-edge computing (MEC) and Container Vision’s artificial intelligence (AI) features to digitalise logistics operations.

The PoC was made possible by ZTE Corporation’s support for the provisioning of 5G RAN and 5G Core infrastructure for the private 5G Network. Transocean Logistics is said to be the first container depot in Malaysia to have adopted such technology to automate its container inspection process which is a critical aspect of logistics operations.

The Container Vision solution by Enfrasys has enabled Transocean Logistics’ inspectors to scan and detect defects in real-time using AI on containers arriving at their depot site in Butterworth. These captured images are then transmitted to the edge server via the 5G Private Network for AI inferencing to detect defects and the results are then sent back to the device via the 5G network. This allows inspectors to identify and record defects in real time.

Through the PoC, Transocean Logistics has seen up to 70% improvement in the time required to complete the detection process in comparison to existing practices.

According to U Mobile, the PoC has showcased 5G technology’s capability to advance the logistics industry by delivering enhanced digital solutions, enabled by improved connectivity, service reliability and performance of the 5G Private Network.

Besides automating the inspection process, the PoC also demonstrates U Mobile’s low latency and high bandwidth private 5G network supporting Enfrasys Solutions’ Container Vision application, which enables a seamless digitalisation for Transocean Logistics’ container inspection process.

It also provides an end-to-end digitalisation of Transocean Logistics’ container inspection process, where workers are now able to perform ISO standard inspections by capturing container information and defect images using the Container Vision app. The solution helps improve inspection accuracy and governance while ensuring the data is stored securely within the private network.

Meanwhile, the PoC has also demonstrated improvement in data processing and response time facilitated by MEC as the computation of heavy IA processes is now closer to the application usage source, enabling inspectors to detect and log defects instantaneously. In addition, it also helps to streamline the supply chain business operations with the ability to integrate various upstream business applications, promoting transparency among depot operators and container owners.

U Mobile CTO Woon Ooi Yuen said, “U Mobile is fully aligned with the national drive to leverage technology like 5G to bring about greater efficiencies for industries and businesses, both large corporations and SMEs. This PoC features one of the first few successful 5G private network trials in Malaysia, demonstrating U Mobile’s innovation leadership. The results of the PoC have shown the benefits of combining 5G technology with AI and automation to provide immense enterprise customer value.”

Enfrasys Solutions CEO Tengku Razmi said, “Enfrasys Solutions is able to help bridge and accelerate modern-day business automation by leveraging on cutting-edge technology through our partnership with U Mobile and using their 5G private network. We look forward to enabling further benefits to other logistics clientele and beyond by harnessing automation enabled by AI. We believe that multi-access-edge computing (MEC) will revolutionise applications within enterprises of the future. We are able to work directly with enterprises to offer AI and automation solutions that work seamlessly and unlock value.”

Meanwhile, Transocean Logistics CEO Ismail Bin Ibrahim said, “Transocean Logistics Sdn Bhd is pleased to partner with U Mobile and Enfrasys Solutions to pilot a first-of-its-kind AI solution for container depots in Malaysia. Through this collaboration, we are expected to see a 70% reduction in manual effort for container inspections through the digitalisation of the end-to-end inspection process enabled by 5G and AI. This pilot project is the first in Malaysia, positioning Transocean Logistics Sdn Bhd to become the first container depot in Malaysia to adopt such advanced solution and technology.”

Uncommon Things Actually Covered by Home Insurance: 6 Things to Know

Uncommon Things Actually Covered by Home Insurance

When it comes to home insurance, most homeowners are aware of standard coverage which includes protection against fire, theft, and natural disasters. However, there are numerous lesser-known aspects of home insurance policies that can provide surprising coverage benefits.

Understanding these can not only save you money but also provide peace of mind in unexpected situations.

Also, choosing a well-known company like Erie Mutual Insurance is always recommended. This article explores six uncommon things that are actually covered by most home insurance policies.

insurance policyinsurance policy

1. Counterfeit Money Losses

It might sound like a plot from a crime show, but receiving counterfeit money can happen to anyone, and it can be costly. What many don’t realize is that home insurance policies often cover losses due to counterfeit currency. If you accidentally accept fake money, your insurance can reimburse you for what you’ve lost. This coverage typically falls under the broader umbrella of theft protection, which is a standard part of many home insurance policies. Whether you’ve been handed fake bills during a garage sale at your home or as part of a business transaction, it’s comforting to know that your insurance may cover the financial setback. It’s a lesser-known benefit that underscores the value of thoroughly understanding the specifics of your home insurance policy.

2. Meteorite and Other Falling Objects Damage

Imagine a scenario where a meteorite or another unusual object from the sky lands on your property. While it might seem like a scene from a science fiction movie, it’s actually something that your home insurance likely covers. This type of protection is included under what insurers refer to as coverage for “falling objects.” This includes anything from space debris to parts of aircraft that might unexpectedly plummet towards your house. The insurance typically covers the damage to your home and other structures on your property, ensuring repairs or replacements are handled without significant financial impact to you. Recognizing that such bizarre incidents are covered can provide a significant relief in the rare event that they occur.

3. Legal Defense Costs in Defamation Lawsuits

home insurancehome insurance

Home insurance isn’t just about physical property; it can also offer protection against certain legal liabilities. Surprisingly, this includes coverage for legal defense costs if you are sued for defamation, slander, or libel. If someone accuses you of damaging their reputation through your words or actions, and they decide to take legal action, your home insurance policy might cover your defense expenses. This coverage can be vital in helping you handle the legal complexities and potential costs associated with defending against such claims. However, it’s important to check the specifics of your policy, as coverage for defamation is not universally included and can vary widely between insurance providers and policies.

4. Rodent Damage to Vehicle Wiring

Rodents can cause more trouble than just being a household nuisance; they can also lead to significant damage to vehicle wiring if your car is parked on your property. Surprisingly, many home insurance policies provide coverage for this type of damage. This coverage is particularly useful because the cost of repairing wiring chewed by mice, rats, or squirrels can be unexpectedly high, often running into hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The comprehensive part of your auto insurance usually covers such incidents when the vehicle is parked at home, but knowing that your home insurance might also provide a safety net can offer additional peace of mind. It’s a less-known aspect of insurance that underscores the importance of understanding all potential protections your policy may offer.

5. Spoiled Food Reimbursement After Power Outages

Dealing with a power outage is frustrating enough without worrying about the contents of your fridge and freezer. Fortunately, many home insurance policies include coverage for spoiled food resulting from extended power outages. This specific coverage can be a lifesaver for households that experience a sudden loss of electricity due to covered perils like storms or other natural disasters impacting the power lines. Typically, the policy will reimburse you for the food that spoils if the power outage lasts for a certain period, usually around 24 hours or more. While the deductible might apply, the coverage can still save you from the financial pain of replacing potentially hundreds of dollars worth of groceries. It’s a valuable aspect of home insurance that many may not be aware of but can significantly mitigate the inconvenience and cost impact of a power outage.

6. Damage from Volcanic Eruptions

Although it might seem like a catastrophic event that could only happen in movies, volcanic eruptions are real threats in some regions, and surprisingly, standard home insurance policies often cover damage caused by such eruptions. This coverage typically includes protection from fire, ash, lava, or other related perils associated with a volcanic event. Whether it’s minor ash damage affecting your home’s exterior or more severe consequences like lava flow, knowing that your policy covers these events can provide significant peace of mind to those living near volcanically active areas. The policy not only covers the structural damage to your home but also often extends to personal property damaged or destroyed by the eruption. Despite its rarity, this type of coverage is crucial for those in susceptible locations and highlights the broad scope of protection offered by home insurance policies.

Additional Unusual Coverages in Home Insurance Policies

protect homeprotect home

Beyond the more familiar scenarios, home insurance can cover a range of other unusual events that might surprise you. For example, if you’re forced to evacuate your home due to a civil authority’s order (such as a nearby wildfire or chemical spill), your insurance may cover your additional living expenses during the evacuation. Another less-known coverage is for identity theft, where some policies will cover expenses incurred from restoring your credit and legal fees associated with reclaiming your financial identity.

Moreover, if you own a trampoline or a pool, your home insurance might extend to cover injuries related to these items, albeit often requiring specific safety measures to be in place. For those with valuable collections, such as art or rare books, a standard policy may offer an option to add a personal articles floater, which provides broader coverage for these valuable items against a wide range of potential perils. Each of these coverages highlights the importance of thoroughly reviewing your home insurance policy to understand all the protections you have at your disposal.

Podcast Hub Promotes Screen Adaptation

International podcast network Paradiso Media has introduced Podcast to Screen, an online hub meant to streamline and facilitate rights acquisitions for audiovisual adaptations. Launching with more than 200 IPs on offer, the digital database offers a curated catalogue of audio titles with strong cross-media potential.

“We wanted to create a platform that would classify and centralize the best in global podcasts, offering a tool that allows you search by way of genre, theme, keyword and language,” explains Paradiso Media CEO Lorenzo Benedetti. “We’re looking to create a one-stop-shop for podcast IP.”

With advertising investment cresting the $2 billion mark in the U.S alone, with market saturation reaching more than 40% of U.S households, and with podcast adaptations like “Dirty John,” “The Dropout” and “WeCrashed” proving the viability of the earbud-to-screen pathway, Paris-based Paradiso Media has sought to capitalize on a new media growth sector that be a proving ground for stories that connect.

Founder of web content agency Studio Bagel turned head of digital at Canal+, Paradiso CEO Lorenzo Benedetti now looks to welcome podcast creators into fecund ecosystem in which so many YouTube-revealed talents have flourished, all while brining the audio market closer in tune to a more traditional audiovisual model.

“Podcasting is a format,” Benedetti explains. “And so many tools from the TV industry can make sense for podcasts as well. While Paradiso Media handles management and advertising – creating a monetization network to make independent creators more visible and to help them thrive – we now must encourage partnerships in the audiovisual sector.”

The newly launched platform offers a curated selection of quality-controlled titles, presenting industry users with often hard-to-access info like audience satisfaction ratings, listening statistics, series bibles, rights availabilities and creator contact info – all in English, no matter the show’s provenance. Working with the European Commission, the studio will next develop AI tools for fast translation, making French, Italian, German and English language content to circulate far beyond linguistic and national boundaries.

Paradiso has already seen eleven podcasts optioned for various forms of adaptation, and boasts two films currently in production. Later this year will see the release of “In Flip-Flops at the Base of the Himalayas,” a French-language dramedy about a mother who embarks on a globetrotting journey after her son is diagnosed with autism.

Produced by Paradiso and  Cinefrance (“Falcon Lake”) and led by the creative team behind the César-winning comedy “Simply Black” (pictured above), the project began as a podcast before giving way to first a stage and now screen adaptation – in fact, the first feature film adaptation of French podcast.

Diamondbacks’ Slade Cecconi looking to make mental adjustment

0

PHOENIX — Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Slade Cecconi has been as dominant as any starter in baseball the first time through an opposing batting order, and that continued Tuesday against the Cincinnati Reds.

He did not give up a hit until his 12th batter, yet his final line was 5.2 innings and a grisly six earned runs in a 6-2 loss.

Cecconi became the only pitcher of the past 50 years to throw 2.0 perfect innings in five straight starts at any point of a season but has faced problems maintaining that ember.

He challenged himself after the game to make a mental adjustment, aiming to get rid of a bad habit.

“When I find myself getting hit is when I find myself looking to place the ball,” Cecconi said. “I’ll usually maybe take a mile an hour or two off a pitch to try to execute it. I’m learning that can’t happen, that’s not going to play at this level. The better thing to do is always throw my best stuff.

“… As unfortunate as today was, I’m looking to use today as the day I take the mental leap.”

Here are opposing hitter splits against Cecconi this year:

First time: 1-for-43, 12 Ks
Second time: 15-39, 6 Ks

The right-hander’s fastball velocity had a wide range, up to 96.7 mph and down to 89.7 mph. He felt this was not a fatigue issue. He ripped a couple 96 mph heaters in his last at-bat to punch out Jonathan India.

Cecconi noticed himself placing the ball especially when behind in counts, which he seldom was the first round through the order. Cecconi was in attack mode with his fastball and effectively using the changeup, getting through three innings with only 34 pitches.

“They were swinging a lot early that first time through. I think the second time through we used the curveball more early and I wasn’t landing it,” Cecconi said. “But I think that was what got in my head a little bit where I was like, ‘Okay, I’m not landing that first pitch, I’m behind, let me get back into the count.’ That can’t happen anymore.”

The Reds scored two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and went 7-for-14 at the plate against Cecconi after the third frame. Will Benson hit a two-run shot to take a 4-2 lead in the fifth, one the Reds never relinquished. Cecconi left the game with four runs charged to him, but Logan Allen let in a pair of inherited runners with two outs.

Manager Torey Lovullo and catcher Tucker Barnhart had a conversation in the middle innings when the catcher was noticing a difference out there.

“When you place the baseball, there’s a lack of finish to it and that’s when hitters really squared it up,” Lovullo said.  “Ninety-six with a fearless, attacking mentality is going to get you better results than trying to place the baseball with no finish.”

“I don’t know what attributes to that necessarily, but of a lot of times when you get into a little bit of trouble, everybody tends to try to do maybe a little bit more, try to get three outs with one pitch,” catcher Tucker Barnhart said.

Cecconi said this issue has popped up in the past, but he figured it had to do with conditioning. Plus he was more equipped to get away with it at lower levels.

Lovullo has brought up Cecconi needing to get through a lineup thrice effectively multiple times before. This was a reason he was optioned to Triple-A Reno last year and out of the race for the fifth starter role at the end of spring training.

The manager said maintaining Cecconi’s stuff has been on his mind since he’s been watching him pitch. Cecconi is still only nine starts into his big league career, and most of them have been solid. It’s hard not to be tantalized by the highs of these starts, the potential they show. And the D-backs need him with the pitching injuries that continued to test the depth of the roster.

“I know I’ve been very critical of Slade, but I know he’s capable of doing more. That’s what we are supposed to do as coaches and teachers is challenge our guys to be the best version of themselves,” Lovullo said.

Hunter Greene deals vs. Diamondbacks

Arizona’s offense did not build many innings off Reds starter Hunter Greene, who went seven innings with two earned runs.

The D-backs took a 2-0 lead in the third on a Blaze Alexander two-out, two-run knock the other way. After that, the Diamondbacks had four hits, not more than one in any inning.

Kevin Newman stayed hot with a 2-for-2 night. He has multiple hits in four straight games, the only D-backs hitter to do so this season.

Ketel Marte and Gabriel Moreno had the night off and will start on Wednesday.

Diamondbacks’ next game

The rubber match is Wednesday at 12:40 p.m. D-backs right-hander Brandon Pfaadt (4.60 ERA) matches up with Reds southpaw Andrew Abbott (3.35 ERA).

Tune to 98.7 and the Arizona Sports app.

Smart Ways to Save on Driveway Gate Installation Costs

Smart Ways to Save on Driveway Gate Installation Costs

Installing a driveway gate not only enhances security and privacy but also increases the aesthetic value of your property. However, the associated costs can be significant.

Smart homeowners are always looking for ways to reduce expenses without compromising on quality.

Several strategies can help achieve this, such as choosing pre-fabricated gate kits that are designed for easy assembly, reducing labor costs. Also, if you are looking for a durable and high-quality solution, steel driveway gates may be the perfect option for you.

Additionally, opting for simpler gate designs or materials, and considering the timing of the installation to take advantage of off-season discounts can further decrease expenditures.

Choosing the Right Material: Cost-Effective Options

right material for your driveway gateright material for your driveway gate

Choosing the right material for your driveway gate is crucial in managing installation costs effectively. Materials such as wood, steel, and aluminum vary significantly in price and durability.

Wood offers a classic look but may require more maintenance, while steel is highly durable but can be expensive. Aluminum is a cost-effective alternative, providing durability with less maintenance and lower costs.

It’s essential to consider the climate in your area as well; certain materials may deteriorate faster in specific weather conditions.

Opting for the material that best suits your budget and environmental conditions can significantly reduce initial costs and long-term upkeep, ensuring a balance between aesthetics, functionality, and affordability.

Hiring Affordable and Reliable Installation Services

Hiring affordable and reliable installation services can significantly influence the overall cost of your driveway gate project. To ensure you get the best value, it’s crucial to research and compare different service providers.

Look for companies with positive reviews and solid reputations for quality workmanship. Don’t just opt for the lowest quote; consider the balance between cost and quality of service.

Engaging a dependable installer can prevent costly repairs and adjustments down the line, as they are more likely to install the gate correctly the first time. Moreover, some companies might offer package deals that include both the gate and installation at a discounted rate.

Considering Simpler Gate Designs

Gate DesignsGate Designs

Opting for simpler gate designs can lead to significant cost savings during installation. Complex designs often require more material, specialized labor, and extended installation time, all of which contribute to higher costs. A simple, straightforward design not only cuts down on these expenses but also typically requires less maintenance over time. Additionally, simpler gates often blend seamlessly with a variety of architectural styles, providing a timeless look that remains appealing without the need for costly embellishments.

Utilizing DIY Installation Techniques

For the hands-on homeowner, utilizing DIY installation techniques for driveway gates can cut costs dramatically. Many gate models are designed for easier installation, allowing those with basic home improvement skills to undertake the project themselves. Watching instructional videos, reading manuals, and perhaps attending a workshop can equip you with the necessary skills. While DIY installation can save on labor costs, it’s important to realistically assess your skills and the complexity of the installation to avoid potential errors that could lead to additional costs.

Taking Advantage of Seasonal Discounts

Seasonal discounts can be a smart way to save money on driveway gate installation. Many companies offer reduced prices during off-peak seasons when demand for installation services is lower. Planning your project for the winter or late fall can secure these discounts, as businesses are looking to maintain workflow. Additionally, purchasing materials or a gate kit in advance when prices are lower can also contribute to overall savings. This strategic timing allows for significant cost reductions without compromising on the quality of the gate or the installation service.

Comparing Quotes from Multiple Contractors

To ensure you get the best deal on your driveway gate installation, it’s wise to solicit and compare quotes from multiple contractors. This process allows you to evaluate a range of pricing and service options, helping you identify the most cost-effective solution without compromising on quality. Make sure to also assess each contractor’s experience, warranty offerings, and customer feedback. By thoroughly vetting potential service providers, you can secure a competitive price and ensure that your installation is handled professionally.

Opting for Manual Gates Over Automatic Gates

Choosing manual gates over automatic gates can lead to substantial savings in both installation and maintenance costs. Manual gates eliminate the need for electrical components, sensors, and motors, which are essential in automatic gates but also increase the initial cost and potential for future repairs. If convenience is not a primary concern and you prefer lower upfront and ongoing expenses, a manual gate provides a practical and economical alternative.

Using Local Materials to Save on Shipping Costs

Using local materials for your driveway gate can significantly reduce shipping costs, which can be considerable, especially for heavy or bulky materials like iron or wood. Sourcing materials from local suppliers also supports the local economy and often ensures that you get materials that are well-suited to your local climate and environmental conditions. Additionally, local suppliers may provide better deals or discounts, further reducing the overall cost of the gate materials.

Regular Maintenance to Avoid Future Expenses

Regular maintenance of your driveway gate is essential to avoid higher future expenses related to repairs and replacements. Proactive upkeep such as lubricating moving parts, checking for rust, and ensuring that electronic components function properly can extend the life of your gate. Scheduling routine inspections can help identify and resolve minor issues before they become major problems. This approach not only saves money on potentially costly repairs but also maintains the gate’s optimal functionality and appearance over time.

In conclusion, effectively managing the cost of installing a driveway gate is possible through strategic planning and informed decision-making. Homeowners can achieve significant savings by choosing simpler gate designs, opting for manual over automatic gates, and utilizing pre-fabricated kits that reduce the need for professional installation. Furthermore, sourcing materials locally can cut down on shipping costs, and taking advantage of seasonal discounts may offer additional financial benefits. Engaging in regular maintenance ensures the longevity of the gate, avoiding hefty repair or replacement costs in the future.

Diamondbacks end frustrating night vs. Reds with Newman walk-off

0

PHOENIX — Monday’s Arizona Diamondbacks 6-5 walk-off win over the Cincinnati Reds screamed hair-pulling loss until the final pitch flipped the story.

Arizona (20-22) started 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and let a late lead slip away in the eighth inning. Designated hitter Joc Pederson and manager Torey Lovullo were ejected after Pederson was rung up on a pitch out of the zone.

Corbin Carroll took a pitch to the hand and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. got plunked by a fastball in the midsection — Lovullo said they are okay.

With all the mounting angst, the Diamondbacks worked the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, trailing 5-4. Then the right man dug in.

Shortstop Kevin Newman, Arizona’s nine-hole hitter who did not make the roster out of camp but was needed due to injuries, happens to be on fire.

And hitting walk-offs happens to be his specialty.

Newman flicked an 0-1 slider from Reds closer Alexis Diaz into right field, scoring two runs for his sixth career walk-off hit.

Kevin Newman, Diamondbacks’ player of the game

“Thought process is, honestly, just stay middle,” Newman said. “That’s what I’ve changed in the last few days is just working on staying up the middle to stay on those offspeed pitches a little bit better. So I stayed on that one just enough and it dropped in.”

Newman finished the game 4-for-5 and has eight hits over his last three games. His OPS went from .501 on Friday to .710.

Four of his career walk-0ffs have come against Cincinnati, two off Diaz.

“I think it’s just really fun to have the fans behind you and the fans cheering for you so much in such a big situation,” Newman said. “It feels like however many people are there in the stadium and yourself against the pitcher. It’s a really cool feeling.”

Lovullo was appreciative of the way the club fought and remained composed.

Gabriel Moreno and Jake McCarthy stayed patient to work walks as Diaz struggled to control his pitches after hitting Gurriel.

“(Newman has) been playing really great baseball, so right guy in the right spot. But it was built by some patient approaches,” Lovullo said.

“This was a really frustrating night. We seemed to get right there and we couldn’t get that big hit to get us over the top. They kept scrambling and scoring runs and made it real interesting. They pulled ahead and I felt like the best part of the day was everybody regrouping, getting grounded and doing what they had to do to win a baseball game.”

The Diamondbacks got contributions from throughout the lineup on Monday, with the bottom third (Moreno, Pavin Smith, Randal Grichuk, McCarthy and Newman, including substitutions) finishing 6-for-10 with four walks and four RBIs. Moreno hit his first home run of the season in the second off Reds starter Graham Ashcraft.

“I think we’re doing a really good job of battling … trying to get on for the guy behind you, some big boppers at the top of the lineup that can rake,” Newman said.

Pederson, Lovullo explain ejections

Even the specifics in which the Diamondbacks lost the lead felt particularly frustrating.

Reds first baseman Jeimer Candelario checked his swing with two strikes in the eighth inning, and third-base umpire Dan Merzel said he held up. Lovullo did not agree, he admitted later, and Candelario drove in the game-tying single off Kevin Ginkel. The hit was initially called a catch by Carroll in center before replay review overturned it.

Designated hitter Mike Ford roped a ball to right field, which hit off a corner along the fence and bounced the other direction from McCarthy, allowing Candelario to score and take a 5-4 lead.

Pederson’s ordeal occurred with two men on in the bottom half as the D-backs were looking to respond. Home plate umpire Make Carlson rung Pederson up on a pitch low-and-away. Pederson flipped his bat to the ground and squatted, holding his head in disbelief. Carlson gave him a quick hook, and Lovullo was not far behind.

“I didn’t agree with one of the pitches, I flipped my bat and he threw me out,” Pederson said. “And I said what’d you throw me out for? He says ‘Well you flipped the bat.’ I didn’t know that was illegal. I guess I learned something new.”

“I felt like Joc was treated a little bit unfairly there,” Lovullo said. “Usually when the bat is thrown down or slammed that’s an immediate ejection, but Joc flipped it and then picked it up immediately. I don’t think that was very fair, but I was still really pissed about the check swing that wasn’t called against Candelario. I was having a tough time getting that one through my head.”

Pederson was called out on a check swing earlier in the game he did not agree with and had some words at the time. Lovullo felt that added to the frustration of the moment.

“Could I have handled the situation better? Yeah, but at the same time, I think there’s a lot of emotions in this game,” Pederson said. “I was shocked I guess with both of them and reacted in a way that I don’t think caused too much time delay or disrespect.”

Pederson had an eventful night having blasted a solo shot 434 feet off Ashcraft in the third inning.

Arizona starter Jordan Montgomery, meanwhile, went 5.1 innings and let in three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

Relievers Ryan Thompson and Joe Mantiply bridged the gap to the eighth inning, but Ginkel has now allowed runs in three of his last four appearances. Justin Martinez gave the D-backs a clean ninth and picked up his first MLB win. Martinez’s ERA dropped to 0.71.

Monday was Arizona’s third walk-off victory of the season.

“They just really did a wonderful job of rallying around one another despite that frustration and winning a big ballgame,” Lovullo said. “It was nice to see them celebrate out there on the field.”

Diamondbacks’ next game

The D-backs will play for a series win Tuesday at 6:40 p.m. Slade Cecconi will get the start for Arizona against Reds right-hander Hunter Greene, the same pitching matchup as Thursday’s 5-4 D-backs win in Cincinnati.
